Joker and Parasite each made history this morning, emerging among this season’s nine Academy Award nominees in the Best Motion Picture category. Actor-producer John Cho and producer-actress-writer Issa Rae announced the 92nd Oscars®nominations just after 5:00 a.m. PT this morning. Cho and Rae hosted the nominations ceremony, live via global livestream from the David Geffen Theater at the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. The museum is set to open later this year. Garnering a whopping 11 nominations, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, who received a best actor nod for his work in the title role as troubled comedian-turned-criminal Arthur Fleck. Phoenix is only the second actor ever to be acknowledged for a role based on a superhero comic book character. The first, Heath Ledger, played the Joker opposite Christian Bale as Batman in The Dark Knight. Ledger won the Oscar in the best supporting actor category posthumously in 2009. The buzz-worthy Parasite received a nomination in the best picture category—a first for a South Korean movie, as well as a first each for producers Kwak Sin Ae and Bong Joon Ho. The film is also a contender for best international film. Among other noms highlights, Tom Hanks received his sixth Academy Award nomination today—and first in 20 years—for his portrayal of Fred Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Hanks, who makes his first appearance in a supporting category this season, won consecutive Oscars for lead roles in Philadelphia in 1993 and Forrest Gump in 1994, after having earned nominations for lead roles in 1988’s Big, Saving Private Ryan in 1998, and Cast Away in 2000. Harriet star Cynthia Erivo received her first nomination in the lead actress category, plus an original song nomination for “Stand Up.” Netflix is toasting 10 total nominations for its epic The Irishman, including best picture and actor nods for Al Pacino and Joe Pesci the supporting actor category. Robert De Niro did not receive a nomination this season for his work in The Irishman. More absences of note: Industry members and fans are decrying the complete shut-out of women directors in the directors category. That is, particularly in light of of a Best Picture nod for Little Women, directed by Greta Gerwig. Social media erupted as hopes of seeing actor nods for Golden Globe and SAG Award nominee Jennifer Lopez (for her critically-acclaimed work in Hustlers) and SAG Award nominee Lupita Nyong’o (for the dual roles of Adelaide and her evil, tethered self Red in Jordan Peele’s Us) were dashed today. Eddie Murphy (Dolemite is My Name) and Jamie Foxx (Just Mercy) are also among names recurring in conversations about snubs. Who Votes for the Oscars? Academy members from each of its 17 branches vote to determine the nominees within their own crafts – actors vote for actors, composers vote for composers and so forth. In the areas of Animated Feature Film and International Feature Film, multi-branch screening committees vote to select the nominees. Voting members across all disciplines cast votes to select nominees for Best Picture. Beginning Thursday, January 30, 2020, eligible Academy members may vote to select winners across all 24 categories. Voting closes on Tuesday, February 4.
